In the country of Estrad politics has become a bloodsport. Politicians and voters once respected one another and each others' positions, but opinions have recently hardened, driven by talking heads elevating extreme positions. Democratic norms are eroding, and each side is determined to win — regardless of the cost.
Tensions are running high in the fictional country of Estrad as the presidential election draws near. Students play the roles of political parties and media outlets jockeying for power and influence as events unfold. Throughout the simulation, students will receive requests and tasking from the leaders of the organizations, along with updates on unfolding situations from outside sources or other stakeholders. The job is to develop strategy and take action in order to successfully navigate this election year in a way that meets the party or media outlet's goals and objectives.
A scenario is provided along with information about Estrad's people, economics, government and major players. Each participant team also has access to a private role sheet to give students additional information about their assigned role's positions and interests. A detailed facilitator guide helps instructors use the ICONSnet injects tool (providing pre-scripted news stories, intelligence reports, and social media posts) to advance the plot, as the people of Estrad count down to election day.
